Last week, we focused on finding the main topic of a paragraph and identifying the main idea and supporting details. We practiced this skill together on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, students worked in groups to read a paragraph from the week's selection: Exploring Space with an Astronaut. They then found the main topic and details. They added these to a poster and decorated them to fit the text. Students shared their paragraph with the class and described their posters. It was great practice for students to speak in front of the class and "teach" their classmates. We all enjoyed this activity, and the posters look great decorating our second grade hallway! Today, we celebrated Constitution Day. Each year, Constitution Day is September 17 to recognize the adoption of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The Constitution is quite a large concept for second graders to truly "understand" so today we did a variety of activities with the goal that students would understand why it is important to them. We read books and articles on The Constitution and participated in discussions on what could happen if we didn't have laws to protect our rights. At the end of the day, we combined with the 2nd Grade class from across the hall. We looked at the Preamble of the Constitution and explained each piece line by line. The students then worked together to discuss what this would mean to them at school. We worked together to create a Second Grade Constitution based on things we thought were important to help us learn. Students came up with some great ideas such as "being role models" instead of "our posterity". Mrs. Veeser and I were very impressed with the great ideas our classes came up with. After we wrote and read our Constitution, students took turns coming up and signing it. Check out pictures below!
It is hard to believe that we are already two weeks into the school year! This year, I am trying something new by creating this website. I am hoping it will be a good way to communicate and keep you updated on the things that are happening in second grade. So far, it has been a busy two weeks. We have done a variety of different "teambuilding" activities and discussed ways that we can help build our classmates up instead of hurting other's feelings. We have also done a few "Get to Know You" activities as we practice classroom procedures.
If at any point throughout the year you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or using the Remind 101 app. Please keep checking back for pictures and new updates from our classroom! |
